Area To Reflect On: 1 Samuel 27: 1 - 7, (2020. 06. 23 Reading Section: 1 Samuel Chapters 25 – 27)
Title of Reflection: Where is the safest place in times of trouble?
1 Samuel 27 tells the story of David, who has been chased by King Saul for more than a decade, when he is exiled to the land of the Philistines, Gath. After Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him (v. 4). From David’s perspective, this exile to the Philistines can be seen as a wise choice. After that, David was given Ziklag Castle and lived in peace, but the peace lasted only one year and four months (v. 7). When David and his men vacated the city, the Amalekites raided and stole their wives, children, and wealth. The bitter men even talked of stoning David to death (1 Sam. 30:4-6).
Recently, due to the corona crisis, not only the young people but also the older people are worried about where they will live in the future. It is a good thing to reflect on and check the direction you are heading in your life. However, when choosing the next direction, you should not follow the wat you think is safe, the way you think is convenient, like Abraham's nephew Lot. You shouldn't think that because you are peaceful and safe now, that your choice was right. For David, the peace in this land lasted only a year and four months.
When he first became a fugitive from King Saul, David did not know where to go. At that time God, through the prophet Gad, tells him not to stay in the stronghold, but to go into the land of Judah (1 Sam. 22:4,5). The land of Judah is a wilderness and harsh mountainous terrain. It is a land full of danger and inconvenience for David, who is always on the run from Saul. However, this land was the safest place for David.
The safest place in times of trouble is the land of mission God has called you to. The safest land in times of trouble is the place God has told us to be. Even if it is in the wilderness or in a harsh mountainous area, it is the land of blessing, it is a safe place. I hope today you can reflect on where that place is for you.
Question to reflect on)
A question as important as “What am I doing?” is “Where am I?”. What land should I stay in for God to be most pleased?
